Our research-intensive culture means we are focused on pushing forward the understanding and capabilities of new materials while we educate the next generation of materials experts. We are committed to improving materials technology, and are fully equipped to do so with our state-of-the-art facilities in the areas of materials surface analysis, mechanical characterization, lifetime degradation and an extensive suite of advanced electron microscopy instrumentation, which are among the most advanced materials research facilities in the nation.

Materials science and engineering is a discipline that extends from the basic science of materials structure and properties to the design and evaluation of materials in engineering systems. From the Bronze Age to the Silicon Age and the challenges of today, advancements in materials are what drives society forward. And the demand for new and improved materials transcends the categories formerly comprising materials research and education (such as ceramics, metals and polymers), which is why we educate materials engineers with a breadth of knowledge across the entire spectrum of engineering materials, addressing materials as systems in our academic and research approach. Our materials grads invent the state of the future for all technological areas, including aerospace, aviation, transportation, electronics and more. Which is important, because all industries need materials engineers.

This unique field of engineering brings basic science, including chemistry, physics and math, to bear on the technological challenges related to materials products and their manufacturing. Our department is part of the Materials Branch within the engineering school, encouraging synergies between our department and our stand-alone polymers-focused Department of Macromolecular Science and Engineering.

Our department offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

Our Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree program with a major in Materials Science and Engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org.

Mission Statement for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering

The Department of Materials Science and Engineering engages faculty, students, postdoctoral researchers, engineers and staff in developing and understanding relationships between processing, structure, properties, and the performance of materials in engineering applications.  The department provides a research-intensive environment that encourages collaboration and underpins modern education of undergraduate and graduate students as well as professionals in the field. This environment provides a strong foundation for advancing the frontiers of materials research, developing important technical innovations, and preparing engineers and scientists for challenging leadership careers.

The Department of Materials Science will be internationally recognized for excellence in education and research in materials by leaders of industry and peers at academic institutions.  The department will be a destination for students, researchers, and faculty seeking to pursue scholarship that advances the science and engineering of materials.
